In the context of the United Arab Emirates’ endeavor to provide a sustainable environment with the aim of preserving the environment, the country recently launched the Sustainable Schools Initiative, which, along with many other initiatives, seeks to achieve environmental peace and preserve natural resources. We shed light on the initiative of sustainable schools in the UAE from all sides.
The Sustainable Schools Initiative was launched in 2009 in partnership with the Department of Education and Knowledge in Abu Dhabi and sponsored by BP. It allows young people to explore the environment and learn ways in which they can reduce their environmental footprints, and instill in them a sense of participation and responsibility towards the future. Participation: Evaluate its environmental performance in five different axes, namely, air, water, soil, energy and waste, and address its problems in these aspects, within the framework of the Green Schools Audit Initiative.
Many may ask what are sustainable schools? This initiative is considered a new one of its kind, and the first in the country. It is worth noting that this initiative is a comprehensive initiative undertaken by the entire school staff, from students, teachers, parents, administrators, and even maintenance staff, and ultimately this initiative works to connect all of them with society, and this initiative depends on interaction and participation.
The initiative aims to:
- Enabling students to communicate with the community
- Building school capacities in the field of auditing and monitoring environmental impacts and managing them with the best available methods
- Students communicated with different environments through environmental field trips
- Provide the opportunity for teachers to learn new methods and skills to impart environmental education in the classroom
Foundations of initiative
There are many steps and initiatives that schools must follow to be among the sustainable schools in the country, and following the foundations for designing sustainable schools:
Green schools audit
Environmental auditing is a tool that helps the school community to check the extent of their use of natural resources in the school, and this program provides them with different methods and methods to evaluate their efforts in the field of environmental management, as each participating school must conduct an assessment of environmental performance, and upon registration, each school receives an audit evidence Environmental Environment which helps schools assess the five main elements, which include water, air, energy, waste and land.
As this evaluation helps each school to know its environmental level and what it should be with respect to environmental standards, which helps it to set goals and the administrative plan, and gradually achieve sustainability and improve the environmental performance year after year.
Creating and managing environmental clubs
Environmental clubs open the door for students to participate in environmental projects and activities, as they are a forum through which students can participate with parents and others to enhance their positive environmental behavior, and the environmental eco-club for sustainable schools in the Emirates enables students to understand environmental concepts in educational curricula, where the environmental club is established by a teacher and a group of students who want to know more about the environment, and this group takes measures to improve the environment around them.
In turn, the “environmental club” helps students discover environmental concepts and activities within a broader framework of the curriculum or educational boundaries, Which helps to achieve sustainability in schools.
Training of apprentices
Environmental educators usually face a great challenge, because they seek to change behavior and push students towards acquiring new knowledge and skills on them, and it is often said that it takes generations in order to change values, because environmental education must be a sustainable education that has an impact over time for all educational materials and stages.
The teacher training unit focuses on integrating environmental concepts into the educational curriculum, ensuring that teachers from different educational backgrounds speak one language when it comes to environmental education and includes these concepts in the educational system. Teachers from schools that have registered in the project are given the opportunity to participate in training courses with experts in environmental education, and training them on the concepts of effective communication with students for sustainability, while the best practices in the environmental field are also exchanged with a group of organizations and trainers with specialization in this field.
Field trips form the bridge that alleviates the gap between children and the environment, and this is summarized in field trips, through which children will have strong learning opportunities that motivate them to interact directly with the environment, and thus they will realize the importance of caring for nature.
Leadership schools are considered a tool whose aim is to help school communities review their use of natural resources, and in turn they provide schools with the appropriate methodology to be able to manage the environment by evaluating themselves. Environment in Abu Dhabi.
