But, if handcrafted items appeal to you- we have this excellent suggestion for you. Whether you are a resident or tourist, Women’s Handicraft Center, Abu Dhabi, is a must-visit destination. Let us know more about the same in the upcoming sections!
Women’s Handicraft Centre
Women’s Handicraft Centre is an initiative by the Abu Dhabi Women’s Association under the leadership of General Women’s Unions (GWU) HH Sheika Fatima bint Mubarak. The center is located behind the General Women’s Union’s (GWU) main building in Karama street. It was conceptualized to create awareness and showcase the rich traditional heritage of the region’s crafts and arts.
By forefronting women, it aims to build and promote their competencies in all the public aspects, including participation in the UAE government.
Heritage of the Emirati
Inside the center, there is a museum to display the artist’s works and a shop where the visitors can buy them. Textile weaving, basket making, Arabian oils, incense, embroidery, silver thread work, pottery, etc., are all done here.
The museum exhibits the everyday life of the nation’s history and heritage. Starting from the hand-mills they use to grind wheat to what the wedding attire looks like and the beauty products they use.
More than 70 women work here and make a living by selling their work in the center’s shop. Most of those who work here have learned these traditional skills from their mothers and grandmothers. It serves as a place for teaching the tradition to the next generation too. It is not just the display of finished works. You can sit and watch how the women weave their magic into the arts.
It is the perfect spot for visitors to buy handmade souvenirs for their family and friends back home. To all the Instagrammers, ask permission before you take photographs. Also, you shouldn’t wear shoes inside the center. Make sure you heed the directives.
Women’s Handicraft Centre has been on the list of the Official foreign delegation visit for ages.
This initiative encourages the local artist’s skills and elevates them to attain international attention. It motivates young people to get interested in these crafts and learn to incorporate their elements in their field of expertise.
