The people of the UAE have never shied away from showing their everlasting love to their seas. From integrating the sail shape into the design for the Burj Al-Arab to underground suites at the Atlantic they have always embraced their connection with the sea. In yet another feat of architectural achievement, Sharjah has greenlit the construction of the ‘Kalba Floating Theatre’. Located on the corniche of the city of Kalba, this Seashell shaped floating theatre will be the literal pearl of the ocean on the shore of Kalba.
The Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council has already visited the location and also approved its inauguration.
The architecture
The theatre has a distinct shape and resembles a seashell. The beautiful theatre is surrounded by waterways – a design that was proposed by the His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi.
The Kalba Floating Theatre is connected to the corniche. It grants the visitors an uninhibited view of the Corniche and the open Arabian Sea.
The theatre will host various events and programs to attract visitors throughout the year.
The most fascinating aspect of this theater’s construction is the shell-shaped roof of the theatre that cascades over it. This roof does not seem to be supported by any support beam or pillar, it is a free-standing structure in itself.
The Kalba Floating Theatre is being built to put Sharjah on the map of the world and draw more visitors here.
What are some of the other attractions here?
The floating theatre is still in its early days of inception. Some other projects include the Kalba Heritage Museum, a sail-shaped building that will be built on the seashore.
The Heritage Mosque Square was recently inaugurated back in April. The Mosque Square portrays the Seafaring traditions of Kalba. The roof of the recently restored Saif bin Ghanim Mosque, one of Sharjah’s oldest places of worship is built of coral. The roof of the mosque is covered with palm fronds.
