Transportation is the backbone of any city. It occupies a significant chunk in determining the cost of living and ease of living indexes. If a city couldn’t provide a better mode of transport, it’ll affect every aspect of its growth.
Dubai, the cosmopolitan destination in the Middle East, offers 6 modes of public transportation in and around the city. On September 9, 2021, it set a record for the highest number of public transport users since the pandemic.
According to the Emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), more than 1.3 million people benefited from using its public transportation.
RTA also announced the breakdown of the services people used. Public buses served 254,420 passengers, while the Dubai Metro saw 458,060 passengers. 15,932 people used the tram, and 21,502 passengers used the marine mode. 66,590 passengers utilized E-hailing and car-sharing services while 516,40 took taxis.
The RTA, in March 2021, amid the pandemic second wave, collaborated with the Dubai Health Authority to administer vaccines to more than 20,000 drivers under its fleet. It is a commendable achievement.
Other than this, the RTA also implemented 3 essential practices to tackle Covid 19. 1st is ensuring a safe and sound work environment for all the employees. 2nd to safeguard RTA’s facilities, especially public transit, and make it free from covid hazards for the continuance of its services throughout the Emirate. And 3rd is the constant support by Dubai Government to fight the pandemic.
According to His Excellency Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the RTA Board of Executive Directors, “RTA keenly sanitized every train by the end of each journey. It also ensured intensive sanitization of every fleet and station by the end of every operational day.”
“For instance, RTA was keen to sanitize each train at the end of each journey and carry out intensive sanitization of the entire fleet and stations at the end of operations each day,” added Al Tayer.
His Excellency further added that these efforts have been consistent with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. “It is to make Dubai the best city in the world to live and work in. Hence RTA has offered high levels of excellence to provide safe, affordable, and sustainable mass transit.”
The record emphasizes the growth of the public network in Dubai and the ease it gives to the people. It also highlights the timely measures the government took during the pandemic to bring it under control. Now the city is on its way to going back to its healthy normal.
