What are the possible causes of bleeding gums?

Seeing blood on your toothbrush or in the sink after brushing your teeth can be a scary thing, and it is often thought that the cause is vigorous flossing or a hard toothbrush. If you find that bleeding gums is occurring almost daily, it may be time to contact your doctor to find out if there is a reason for this bleeding.

Here are some of the most common causes of bleeding gums, and what to do about them.

Wrong cleaning with the floss

If you floss frequently and find that your gums are bleeding, you may be doing it the wrong way. According to dentists, flossing straight up and down can sever and damage gums. Instead, pass the floss around each tooth gently, starting under the gum without applying much pressure. This way, you won’t miss any food particles or bacteria.

When deciding which type of thread to purchase, you must take into account the size of the gaps between the teeth and choose floss made from vegetable wax, free of plastic and not covered with any artificial flavors.

Irregular oral hygiene

This can be taken for granted, and not brushing and flossing regularly is a major factor in bleeding gums. Some people avoid flossing completely because of laziness or bleeding gums. My hand is not used floss regularly to the loss of about 3 5 per cent of the plaque between teeth and vital membrane. It is important to note that some oral care products can actually contribute to bleeding gums as well because antiseptic products, including mouthwash and toothpaste, destroy the mouth microbiome.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis, caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar and increased levels of bacteria, is a very common gum disease. Poor oral hygiene is usually the main cause of gingivitis, so your best bet to prevent bleeding gums is to have a regular cleaning session with your dentist, and clean your home twice daily.

Gum disease

Failure to treat gingivitis properly leads to gum disease, the symptoms of which can range from bleeding gums and bad breath to tooth movement, malocclusion and tooth deviation. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to bone loss and may be associated with other medical conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. Therefore, we recommend that you make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Infection

Dental infections can occur due to various reasons, such as caries. Some of the signs of infection could be swelling, a bad taste in the mouth, pain or a sensitivity to heat. The infection may travel through the gums, causing a blister-like blister. This blister may bleed and be painful to touch. Dental infections should be treated promptly by a dentist to avoid further infection.

Medicines

Some medications, such as blood thinners, can have side effects, including enlarged gums. Blood-thinning medications reduce the ability of the blood to clot, which leads to easier bleeding, especially at the gum line. Some other medications that may cause bleeding gums are antidepressants and blood pressure medications.

Smoking

We all know that smoking is harmful to health, and gingivitis is one of its side effects. Because smoking blocks blood flow, the lack of oxygen reaching the gums can lead to inflammation. If your gums do not heal properly, you may experience bleeding while brushing.

Pregnancy

Your body can undergo many uncommon changes during pregnancy, including bleeding gums.

Eat processed foods

If you need another reason to choose organic foods, some ingredients in processed foods can irritate the gums and cause slight bleeding and include sugar, fried foods, artificial preservatives, colorings, artificial flavors, and meats that contain hormones. Be sure to eat fruits and vegetables, along with calcium, vitamins C and D, and magnesium, as these are essential ingredients for oral health.
